Required Courses

  • The HKUST MBA program offers a strong foundation for success in management through rigorous study and an emphasis on creativity, analytical thinking and teamwork. At the heart of the Western-structured curriculum are required courses in business essentials in both global and Chinese contexts—covering everything from financial knowledge and management strategies to communications and responsible leadership.
  • The required courses are arranged in three tiers—foundation, functional, and integration. These provide fundamental knowledge and a basis for further study in chosen areas.

  • Foundation Courses
  • jiaPreparing to Lead (MGMT 521)
  • This is a residential program in which students undertake the practical study of managerial work. It examines students' communication skills and offers the opportunity for assessment and feedback. The organizational contexts, teambuilding, and case work in the course aim to build cohesiveness among students.
  • jiaData Analysis (ISOM 551)
  • The statistical concepts essential to business decision making are the focus of this course. Covering various discrete and continuous probability models and their application in business, the course also takes in the estimation and testing of hypotheses, and simple and multiple linear regression analysis.
  • jiaFinancial Accounting Foundations (ACCT 510)
  • This course introduces accounting concepts, preparation and the interpretation of financial statements. On completion, students have the ability to define and analyze accounting and business problems, apply critical reasoning, and make justified decisions.
  • jiaGlobal Macroeconomics (ECON 520)
  • An ‘IS-LM' equilibrium framework is used in this course to analyze fiscal and monetary policies and the major markets that affect the macro economy—the labor, output, money, and foreign exchange markets. Mathematical models are used, involving a small amount of calculus but relying primarily on algebraic and graphical methods.
  • jiaManagerial Accounting Foundations (ACCT 521)
  • This course concentrates on accounting themes ranging from the cost-volume profit relationship to incentives and performance measures, and on to quality, customers, and competitors. Students learn the use of accounting data in decision making, financial planning, control, and performance evaluation within organizations.
  • jiaManagerial Communication (SBMT 511)
  • Communication skill is a leading contributor to job effectiveness, satisfaction and success. This course gives students an opportunity to improve their ability to communicate efficiently and effectively as managers and develop the critical communication capabilities they will need as business leaders.
  • jiaManagerial Microeconomics (ECON 511)
  • This course focuses on understanding the individual economic behavior, competition, and market characteristics that are relevant to business and management. Students are familiarized with tools, concepts, and perspectives from economics for performing industry, demand and supply, and competition analysis. They also gain exposure to the analysis of pricing and other business decisions.
  • Functional Courses
  • jiaCorporate Finance (FINA 512)
  • This course provides a framework for analyzing the major types of investment and financing decisions. The areas covered include the methods that managers use in determining what investments to make, which companies to acquire, and which new products to introduce. Students discuss how stocks are priced, the relation between risk and return, and the estimation of a firm's cost of equity. A good knowledge of the topics in this course is important for careers in consulting, investment banking, and corporate management.
  • jiaInformation and Technology Management (ISOM 502)
  • Students in this course gain a general manager's perspective of the strategic roles of information and technology. They also gain an overview of enabling technologies, how information systems are developed and managed, and how technology management decisions are made.
  • jiaManagement of Organizations (MGMT 523)
  • The nature of contemporary organizations and the behavior of individuals and groups within them form the focus of this course. Students are introduced to topics that can help them become effective managers and leaders, including the strengthening of individual and group decision making, learning how to effectively motivate employees, improving negotiation skills, developing leadership abilities, managing organizational culture and structure, and directing organizational change.
  • jiaMarketing Strategy and Policy (MARK 512)
  • This course helps students to understand the decisions and challenges faced by managers at the marketing operations level. Students learn about team development and management, planning processes, and the analytical tools used by marketing managers. They are also exposed to strategy development, implementation and change.
  • jiaOperations Management (ISOM 561)
  • This course introduces students to the management of business processes that produce goods and services. The topics covered include operations strategy, process analysis, queuing systems, inventory management, quality management, process improvement and other important issues.
  • Integrated Courses
  • jiaResponsible Leadership and Ethics (SBMT 543)
  • In this course, students learn what it takes to be a responsible leader and how leaders can create responsible corporations. They also learn about the ethical responsibilities of corporate leaders, the challenges faced, and how responsible and ethical decisions are made amid those challenges. Other topics include how leaders can engage in sustainable corporate social responsibility activities that create lasting positive impacts on society.
  • jiaStrategic Management (MGMT 541)
  • This course exposes students to the major techniques and approaches to the development and implementation of corporate strategies. They also learn the core strategic concepts available to general managers, and how to apply them to strategic decision making.
  • jiaMastering the Future (Subject to University's Approval)
  • Echoing the initial residential program, this course provides a powerful way to wrap up the valuable learning experience from the MBA program and enhance the close connections of students with Business School when they become alumni. Experiences shared by external speakers will further reinforce the solid foundation for students to be a responsible leader. Through various interactive team and panel discussions, students will be fully prepared to master their challenging leadership roles in the future.
